Greatest NHL comeback-St.louis Blues vs. Toronto Maple Leafs

Thursday, February 18th, 2010

This is the greatest thrid period comeback in the history of the NHL. The blues trailed 5-0 with 15:10 remaining in he game, and came back to score 5 goals to force overtime, and would then score 17 seconds into OT. Only three times has a team come back from being behind 5 goals in the third period. Al Macinnis, who scored the Blues 3rd goal in this game, also played on the Flames in 1989 when they did the same thing, coming back from being down 5-0 in 15:44 and winning in Overtime. The other occasion was in 1982 in the playoffs between the Kings and Oilers. The kings were trailing 5-0 in the third period of a best of 5 series in which they were already down 2-0. they rallied to win the game and eventually win the series, upsetting the oilers and wayne gretzky. Aside from the historical significance of this game, it really epitomizes everything that was good about the Blues in the Late 90’s. Al Macinnis with his rocket shot, Pavol Demitra and others explosive offense, the spirit to keep fighting even when they should be down and out, and Ken Wilson with the amazing Play by Play. It’s a shame this team was never able to bring the cup to St.Louis.
